Code Talker


Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two by Joseph Bruchac, is an easy read for multiple grade levels.Throughout World War II, in the conflict fought against Japan, Navajo code talkers were a crucial part of the US effort, sending messages back & forth in an unbreakable code in the Navajo native language. Perfect for US history in discussing US involvement in WWII.

  1. I think that this book would be also be a great pick for the English classroom because it reinforces the importance of language and the many roles it plays in society.

    Furthermore, this novel is diverse literature, which lends itself well to the New York State standards for English Language Arts.

  2. I used this novel for my book project in Massena and so many of the students loved it. This was the book that a group of Resource Room kids chose to work on, and their projects turned out great.

    Many kids from this area especially liked the book because the author came here a few years ago for a book talk. Great choice, and it teaches history!!
