This blog is devoted to exploring the connection between the secondary Social Studies and English classrooms. We aim to discuss relevant literature that bridges the content between the two subject areas. We look forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions about the literature and the ways it can be used in the classroom.
In my opinion, Water for Elephants includes mature content that isn't appropriate for the majority of students in school. I would feel uncomfortable even teaching it to seniors.
The novel, however, is based on the author's research about the era and about the history of circuses in the United States. It provides an interesting take on life during that time period.
As an avid adult reader of fiction, I loved the book. I would suggest that educators carefully screen the novel before reading it as an entire class!

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
ReplyDeleteGreat book one of my kids read in Massena for the book project that helped her learn about the Great Depression.
